    Disassembly -- a desperate measure

If you want to tinker with your flashlights, then sometimes you need to separate two parts of the body that have been threaded together, and perhaps glued with a thread-locker. You probably have a pair of strap-wrenches, and these do a great job in 90% of the cases. They are powerful, fast, and...

    Minimum usable illumination -- ideas?

What are some practical benchmarks that you would specify for the minimal usable illumination from a flashlight? I mean tasks that you need it to perform. And imagine these with dark-adjusted eyes, plus corrective lenses if you need them. I am not asking for minimum lumen measurements (though...

What kind of collector are you?

This question came up on another thread, and I thought I’d boost it. Are you a one-brand-band — your collection is all McGizmos, or all Fenix, or all Armytek? Or are you a bitzer — your collection is bits of ZL and bits of Thrunite and bits of Surefire? Are you a hodler or a churner? When you...

Want to Buy Zebralight H51r or H31r

Headlamp with XP-E red emitter. Will pay PP/Venmo or trade for H502r red mule. Thanks!

    NiMH with USB-C port?

Is anyone yet making an Eneloop-style 1.5v rechargeable that has a built-in USB-C port? Nitecore makes a good selection of 3.7v Li-Ion cells with built-in USB-C ports. But I don't see anyone doing it for 1.5v AA-format or AAA-format cells. Any thoughts?

    Merry Kelvin Temps!

Here's a little photo essay on why color temperature matters, with lights provided by Vinh: 6500K 2700K I think we can conclude that medieval cathedrals did not use cool white LEDs. Thanks, Vinh! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

    A Big Idea

Ladies and Gentlemen, Make way for genius. I have an idea that is going to revolutionize the world of portable lighting, and I am willing to share it with you. For a small licensing fee, you can get in on the ground floor of this new era. Okay: You know how some flashlights have emitters for...

    Rechargeables in Streamlight Sidewinders?

The Sidewinder X and Compact III are both dual-fuel, eating AA or CR123. Does anyone know whether they will also run off 4.2v rechargeable cells? I.e., 14500s and 16340s? Definitely not listed in the documentation, but then support for rechargeables is not always documented...

    Review: Streamlight Nano AAAA

Streamlight Nano Light II, AAAA Short review: pretty good, could be better. I love tiny lights, which usually means AAA lights. But for some time, I have wanted to try a single-cell AAAA light, which should be even tinier. Klarus used to make one (the "Mi X5"), but I have never been able to...

    AAAA lights?

I'm looking for an old Klarus Mi X5, or an "Aunoc AAAA" -- both lights took the elusive, tiny AAAA cell. If you have one in decent shape, send me a note! Thanks.

    WTB Gerber Infinity Ultras

Empty out your junk-drawers, folks, and see if you have any of these old beaters for me. I've got a strange fondness for them (nobody else loves them, that's for sure), and I'm still looking for a few more. This time, I'm restricting my ask to models that have a white serial number on the...

    Smallish, brightish LEP

Does anyone have any recommendations for a LEP with around 500kcd (±) and not bigger than a typical Fenix 18650 light? County Comm has some nice small ones -- based on the 16340, 18350, or 14500 cell -- but those all top other at around 125kcd. Then they have a 21700 unit which puts out 895kcd...

    Current 5mm candela champ?

Which current 5mm has the tightest, brightest spot? Think about the first-generation of 5mm LEDs -- like in the AAA Arc, or the old Fenix E01. Terrible purple/blue tint, lousy color rendition, not a pretty beam. BUT! They threw well for their size. They probably put 90% of the lumens into a...

Erwinyte AAA -- a brief review

Jon Slider the other night drew my attention to a new light available on AZ, the "Erwinyte" AAA. I purchased one, and here is my brief review: I'll be returning it. The good things: The light bears a strong physical resemblance to the old Thrunite Ti3 (or Maratac), but it is about 3mm shorter...

    AAA with firefly

I loved the old Thrunite Ti3 because it came on in a "firefly" mode, rated at 0.04 lumens but probably more like 0.1-0.2. A very handy amount of light -- pretty much all that I use at night indoors. But Thrunite no longer sells them. Is anyone still making a AAA light with a firefly mode? Maybe...

    Gerber Infinity Ultras wanted

Will pay $30 plus S&H for working models in good shape. Any LED color, Ultras or Ultra-Ms. I'm looking for the body style with two O-rings on the tail-cap. Not interested in CMG Infinities or bodies with only one O-ring . Thanks!

    WTB Thrunite Ti3 V2 AAA

They used to be cheap and readily available -- then they disappeared. Got one you'd like to sell? Let me know. Thanks!

    26650's that are 65mm long

Hi Team! Can you help me to find a brand of 26650 cell that is not much longer than 65mm? I foolishly thought that all 26650 cells would be about 65mm long, or not much longer, as 18650s generally are. But the one I got (an XTAR) is labeled on the cell as 69.3mm in length. And sure enough, it...

    ZL H53 on 14500?

When ZL moved from the H52 to the H53, they stopped supporting 3.7v Li-Ion batteries. Now, you can use only 1.2v Ni-MH, 1.5v alkaline (boo!) or 1.6v lithium primaries. That's the official line. But as we all know, there is a difference between what is officially true, i.e. what the legal...

    noob question on "wasted" voltage

When I drive a 3-volt LED with a 6-volt battery, what happens to the extra 3v? Does the difference in voltage mean that half of the power in the battery is "wasted"? My understanding of electronics is *really* weak -- if I can model it with hydraulic flow, then I can understand it (usually)...
