The last PC I built for myself before this one, lasted 10yrs and was still working. It just wouldn't run 'the latest and greatest' whatever. At the time, AI was just a twinkle in their eye. So, it wasn't an issue to weigh the difference of upgrading or completely starting over ground-up with the latest tech.
But for the last few years, invidia, intel, MS have been working together toward AI. The others have also, but not so tightly.
It's not like I haven't noticed. But other than being annoyed, I didn't give it much thought.
Even internet providers are using google's fiber network. You can't run very far without running into AI.
(I used to keep an old CD copy of windows98 just to start a build. It all the tools needed and let you be in control of every step. But MS eventually made it so that I could no longer use it to format drives etc.)
I don't remember when that was. I think windows 7.
I'm with you
@orbital. I'd rather be in control of the tools I use or at least know what and how those tools are working on their own and be able to turn them off at least.

However, atm, AI is just the next step in data farming. We've been doing this since 19,000BC

I don't have issue with data collection. I do it, we all do. We need good and timely information to make smart decisions. When I do it, its for the benefit of me and ppl I care about and/or am accountable to/for.
I only have issue with ppl using said data to make decisions that aren't smart, or can even be harmful. Greed is often the culprit. But even when scientists/engineers do it for noble purposes, they can make mistakes that harm us ...even kill us.
Nukes. Viruses. Chemicals. etc.
It's not different with digital data. It can be dangerous, costly. They don't love us, don't even see us as ppl. We're 1s and 0s that they math together to get $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
If they also, at the very least, used the info to cure cancer and heal addictions and fix global hunger and wars and the general stupidity of humanity, then it would soften the sting of them taking my info and making money off of it.
