26xxx cells have diameter of about 27mm while inside of Mag D battery barrel has diameter of about 32mm.
In order to hold them in center you will need battery tube.

26-27 series cells are similar to "C" cell diameters. I believe C's are similar to AA in length, so, 26500's would be most similar to C cells in terms of size

should take about 20 seconds total to put 2 on each of the three 26800.

To Kilogulf59....you stated you wanted to try to use your spare 18560's...You know you need some sort of adapter...for circumference and length....For circumference I have come up with a way, but it takes like 2 adapters to made a size D circumference......and are way overkill do the the left over pieces, but you might be able to come up with a better way....the stages are 18 to 26...and then 26 to 32.....millimeters that is...1st is 18 to 26...so here is one...

Now you have to work on the length of the maglite...
and as mentioned earlier, https://lumencraft.com has a lot of adapters to lengthen the maglite tube...and different springs & magnets to take up the gaps.......and update the light to an led that can take the 8-9 volts (see lumemcraft) with freshly charged lithium ions....
All this adds $$ and complexity to the system...
I really think your better off using the size D alaleakes...and checking them weekly if you keep them in the light....they last for like 15 years if they don't leak or go dead.....or go with the with AA eneloop with the size D adapters....also dido with the lantern...I am probably the only individual that has never had a Duracell C or D leak....they go dead before they leak......only AA & AAA's...leak for me
Another thing to think about....the 3 AA cells to D cell adapters don't need to have all 3 cells installed to work since they are in parallel. You have a choice to have 1 2 or 3 cells installed in each adapter...maybe a better option than the eneloop single cell adapters...

Previously, I believe I said I picked 18650s because I had two spares for my Wuben lights and wouldn’t have to buy batteries. I did find a 2x 18650 Li-Ion to 3D-Cell Maglite Adapter - conversion w/ LED bulb on Ebay for $26, so if I were to go that route, that seems the best way to go price wise.
Honestly, the Maglite is just an emergency light, as are most of our lights. I do not want to add $$$ and complexity to it. Just to have it ready without worrying about battery leakage, which I’ve been lucky with (using C and D cells) so far. Also, I don't want to risk two expensive radios, a lantern, and a couple of other flashlights; I've pushed my luck long enough I feel.
As I think I mentioned earlier, the Duracells I had in the Maglite expired in 2016 and they still worked with no leaks. In the kitchen above our stove, I keep my old BrightStar 2618 CT incan light just for emergencies (hey, ya got it, use it). That had Energizer Max D cells in it and was fine. Just an observation but it’s been my experience that AAs and AAAs leak far more than do C and D cells.
Any-who, long story short, I got some new Eneloop AAs and adapters. Everything now has Eneloops in them. The old Duracell D cells I just disposed of and I kept the five Energizer Max D cells as backups because they worked and don’t expire until 2033.
I’d like to thank everyone for their assistance and input in this matter. Much obliged to you all. Now I have to look into a problem (I think) with my XTAR BC8 charger...it's the story of my life

To add, on Google calendar I set up a reminder at a six-month interval to test/charge these batteries. So the lights and radios should always be good to go.@Macgravy thanks for going to all that trouble to assist me, much obliged.

Yeah, he's got a great channel. If you don't have any of his D-cell extenders, you REALLY should get some. I have a single 2D that I can run as a 3D, 4D, or 5D with only having to buy one of each of the 1-cell and 2-cell extensions. They were very affordable, and the quality is fantastic. HIGHLY recommended, and it's ENDLESS shenanigans!
