I want to thank
@Mister Ed for checking in on me. Very thoughtful and a nice touch.
Well, I've been on the road for work and family since September 13th. Just getting back in today, October 21st (!).
Oh yeah, there were some hurricanes in there too.
Fortunately, we were spared in both storms.
Helene: I was in Pennsylvania with my fiancé when this happened. It was a nail-biter, watching the security cameras at my fiancé's place and her mother's house. Her mother was out of the country at the time. Neither are coastal or waterfront, but are close and low enough for water to creep. By the grace of God alone, no water inside. Water came within 3-5" of her door. There were only two houses on her mother's street which didn't flood, with her mother's being one of them. If the tide hadn't started going out, or if there was 1-2" of rain, they would have had water inside. The last I heard, 60 vehicles at my fiancé's neighborhood were towed out due to being flooded, with more still cars which haven't moved since then.
Milton: I'll admit that this one snuck up on me. I had seen the weather models a few days in advance and had seen that the tropical moisture near the Yucatan would drift towards Florida, then dissipate before reaching Florida. I never paid attention to the tropical system on the Pacific side of Mexico, which would eventually become Milton. My beach bunker's still offline (terrible HOA), so the situation required some thought. Because of the angle of the storm, no one had a good read on where it was going, but it kept intensifying at an alarming pace.
The initial predictions didn't look good. If the 10-15 feet of storm surge verified, that would have been ~8 feet of water INSIDE their homes. Not good. My fiancé's place and her mother's home weren't going to be safe. Without good options, we left for Atlanta and stayed there until we could verify power and services (water, sewer, internet, gasoline, food) were back. I then spent all of last week cleaning up and putting things back together for everyone else but me.
Her mother's house had some slight damage to decorative trim by a falling tree brushing by the house, but that was it. If that tree had fallen 6' in the other direction, it would have gone right through her roof, and she only has flood insurance. God watching out for us again.
So... tonight, I'm finally back at my temporary home, just emptied out the fridge. and now 3am... I'm off to bed!
