Help Support Candle Power:

thanks for the Opple Flicker Index measurements.. I copied them onto the top half of this chart.. the bottom half are my own measurements of an SC65:

Screen Shot 2026-05-09 at 1.07.57 PM.png

all except Level 8 (M1) on the SC70, are summarized by the Opple as No Risk

Level 8 (M1) on the SC70 is marked Low Risk

That is not PWM, especially as measured by Opple 3.
You can check that many other popular models have the same or similar results tested by Zeroair, yet do not have any PWM.
Don't trust a guy who got deleted as soon as he posted this crap

Whoa, wait! Is Reddit not the brain trust!?!?

Kidding aside, yeah...Reddit never ceases to amuse me with how much bad information flourishes (because the upvote system runs on feelings today, which is not how it worked when Reddit started, and you downvoted BAD information).

SC70: Either I just got a defective unit or the workings of the UI has changed and not in a good way. I 1st reset all levels (clicking 15, then 18, then 21 times) like I've done 1st with every ZL I've ever owned. I then go to G6, which is always my default EDC level that I use. I set the 1-click subset to L1 and L3, just like I did on every other ZL I have. I then set the 1-hold to L5 and L5, then double click to L10 and L12.

From Off, executing a single click produces a flash of a much brighter light prior to shining my L1 setting. It almost appears to be quickly flashing the set brightness of 1-hold setting, prior to displaying my desired 1-click L1 setting.

I'll test more later, as I'm off to work.

as far as I'm aware, ZL has needed to cycle past the hold mode first prior to settling on click mode.

I still haven't found my misplaced h53fc, but I remember the firing order to be 1hold, then timer for 1 click, then timer for 2 click.

button press-fire hold mode with depress timer for 1click. If depress < 1click timer, then 1click mode.

I would typically set my lowest mode to 1 hold, basic general medium brightnesses to 1 click, then high/max to 2 click.

that is unfortunate,
I agree your SC70 firmware is not like all my other Zebras

I use the same G6 you do:

1 Clic = Low
2 Clic = High
Hold = Medium

1 click does Not preflash Medium
I've not had the chance to do much more since my last posting, other than reset all groups and attempt another programming.

Same result when 1-click, in that I get a brief flash of brighter light, prior to my set L1/L3 light that I had set.

Later, I want to see if this flash of light seems consistent with my set brightness of L5/L7 for my medium, which is the 1-hold briefly setting.

If you do experiment, I'd suggest swapping to mode group G7 to tinker, so you don't mess up your current grouping without a reset

I've not had the time to do the "testing" that I wanted to do, but I will tell you, on this particular unit, the trigger time of a single click vs a single hold from OFF is way to short, probably half the reaction/activation time from every other ZL I've owned.

So far, this light is not impressing me.

I'm half-tempted to start a new thread about this, but I'll try it here first.

SC70 UI/Activation Reaction Changes?

The 1st thing I noticed is how quickly the wait/change time between the 1-click and 1-hold is now. It's probably half the reaction time of all the prior ZLs. I don't like this at all.

More troubling is the apparent quick activation of a 1-hold function upon executing a single click from off. It's really difficult for me to explain. It seems that when executing a 1-click from OFF action, a very brief blast of light set from the 1-hold function appears, prior to displaying the 1-click brightness.

if someone could try this on their SC70, I'd appreciate it.

Go to G6 or G7.

Set the levels of the 1-click option to brightness L1 and L3.

Set the levels of the 1-hold to brightness L5 and L7.

Now, attempt the 1-click and see if you notice this behavior. Mess around with various 1-hold brightness levels and see how/if that changes the behavior of your 1-click settings.

I'm basically trying to understand if a change was made or if I simply have it defective unit. I'm extremely fearful that with ZL ****ing around with the electronics, that this is now how the light functions, which is really unacceptable for my use.

Thanks.

I dont have an SC70 so these are just my thoughts in response to your observations...of the two firmware changes in the SC70.

I understand the change is not helpful for someone that remaps the buttons to the way you and I set up our G6 with 1 Clic for Low, and Hold for Medium.

otoh, the new firmware may actually be helpful for someone using standard button mapping.. as follows:

if I understand correctly,
From Off, you discovered that:

1. the new program 1 Clic function uses a shorter 1 Clic timing, so the Hold function triggers sooner.

For people who use standard Hold for Low, this has the potential benefit of making it easier to reach the low mode and less likely to get H1 by mistake.

2. the 1 Clic function has a preflash of the Hold output.

With standard Zebra button mapping of Hold for Low, and 1 Clic for High, Zebras already preflash Low before going to High. The new program acts the same, so not an issue.

...

Revisiting why I originally changed my Zebra button mapping to 1 Clic for Low:

I did that to avoid getting High Mode by mistake in the middle of the night.

The new program might make it easier for me to reach Low by using Hold.
Then I could enjoy normal Low, Medium, High, cycling when using Long Hold.

conclusion:
the new firmware favors the traditional 1C for High, 2C for Medium, Hold for Low, and retains the advantage of Long Hold for Low, Medium, High, cycling.

Every one of ZLs are configured the same and not one of them preflash, not one. For the way I use my ZL, if this is now a feature, it's a huge fail. As far as it now favoring one congratulation over another, chalk that up as another fail (for me).

With each iteration of ZL, something is removed or altered to the point that (for me), there's absolutely nothing, other than size, that gives ZL an advantage. I'm hoping as more folks get there SC70, others will chime in. Thanks for the response.

I've only seen a handful of posts about receiving SC70s, so I don't think many people have them yet. I certainly don't.
For whatever reason, I thought there were a bunch of folks that would have received it by now. I'll wait and see what others experience. I'll be curious to hear your thoughts once you have one in hand.

I have the SC70 and mine does what I think yours is doing. I went to G6 and made the 1 click from off the lowest it would go. When I turn it on there is a brief brighter flash before it goes to the low I set. For me this is not an issue as I like the light overall.

I will be following along to see what others think about this as well.

Yep, that's it. Thanks for trying this and reporting back. For me, it's a problem in the way I use my ZL. 13 total ZLs I own and the SC70 is the only model to exhibit this behavior.
