Like Italian or French type roasts?

I like dark roasts except for starbucks' versions. They tend to be too bitter for me. I don't know if it's the type of coffee they're using? I think they are just over roasting it.
A barista I know put it succinctly - "Starbucks burns their beans."

^they do burn their beans LOL
Awhile back I was told that Starbucks made a conscious decision to roast their beans a little too much because it was harder to produce a consistent flavor from batch to batch with lighter roasts. A burnt roast will always have a consistent (and bitter) taste.

I have yet to find a dark roast that doesn't contain strong notes of charcoal in it. Yuck. I'm a light-to-medium roast fan myself.

"Dark roast" can be a relative description. Surely, tastes differ from person to person. I think most ppl actually like medium roasted coffee. It allows the flavor of the bean to do its thing. (that almost rhymed)
There's more caffeine in light/med roasts vs darker roasts using the same bean. Not a lot more. About 10% at the most.

I've found that the more chocolate/nutty notes of the bean can become burnt/bitter tasting if over roasted. It seems to be OK to roast beans that have more of a fruit/spice/sweet note ...to a point. They can also turn bitter if over roasted. But the spicy and fruity (relatively speaking) flavors get brought to the front if not burnt.

All of that just to say, the best coffee is the coffee you like to drink, the way you like to drink it.**

**chocolate covered espresso beans are also yummy

Not all teabags were designed for hot water...
