I have two mid to late 1990's vintage 3" SF Turboheads (as compared to the more modern 2.5" heads). These smooth finish 3" turboheads throw further than the more modern heads.

The 3" turbo heads nominally support N1, N2. MN15, MN16, MN60, MN61 and N62 LA's. I was happiest with the N62 beam, but th N62LA was discontinued years ago as it was specifically for the 12pm/12pz. I currently run one of the 3' turboheads with a 225 Lumen MN60 and the other with a 350 lumen MN61 driven by 3@ 17670's in a ridiculously long 12PM body with extenders. The MN60 beam is fine but the various MN61 bulbs have a somewhat messy hotspots. Worse, I am afraid to run the MN61 for as long as the rechargeables would allow because the old 3" turboheads have lexan lenses which might not take the continuous heat.

The MN60 has a more compact hot spot and throws farther than the MN61 with each 3" turbohead.

I think I'd want either or both the XP-E R3 or the XP-G R5 with the 1-level 4 to 14 volt 1.4 amp driver. Would it make sense for me to lend you one of the 3" turboheads to decide how much shimming you needed for the tower module, or does the preceding suggest that your basic modules would be fine?

Am I correct in thinking that at 1.4 amps the XP-E R3 would be in the 270 lumen range and the XP-G R5 would put out about 320 lumen?

If you did not mind sending it would be best as it would allow me to shim for maximum throw. These may work but I am not sure. I have a 12Z but it has the 2.5 inch head not 3 inch. I am not sure how much difference that would make.

You are correct with your thinking on both. You are right on the nose with those lumens OTF.

FWIW..I just tried one of Dave's XP-G R4 towers in a SF 3" TH with VVLOP reflector. The focus was perfect, projecting a needle beam with a ~1' hotspot at ~15'. I can't tell if there is shimming under the emitter board, because I don't want to remove the tape.

My XPG R4 1-level 4 to 14 volt 1.4 amp tower module works great with the Surefire M4 host.
I wonder if I can use this module with Surefire M6 host?
I am not sure if the current on the M6 is too high for the module.

Hi

Depends on battery config used, there are many out there. There is a 3X17670 that would be yes, there is a 2X18650, 2X 26500 that is available and will work. Add up the total voltage of the batteries and see if they are less than 14volts

Do realize I don't care what driver you are using the farther away from the VF of the led you are the less efficient the driver is. With an XPG being 3.4 or 3.6 your driver will be much more efficient at 8.4 volts than it will be at 14 or 16 volts.

Since you answered my last email I've done a more thorough flashlight inventory and found a third SF 3" reflector with an actual MN60 LA. (I also found an old type 2.5" reflector like yours.) My favorite "MN60" I referred to earlier had a much smaller glass envelope and filament and is probably a discontinued N61 (guess?)

The real MN60 hot spot is matches the size and sloppieness of the MN61.

Donn's observation of a 1' hotspot at 15' with your XP-G module matches the size of my unlabled small LOLA. The HOLA's form ovals of about 2' by 2.5' at that distance.

Using 3@ older Pila 168S 17670's I need to click my clickie twice before the HOLA will turn on. Apparently the battery protection circuit needs to be jolted once before it is willing to work at the 4-cell HOLA amperage. Furthermore 3@ 17670's will flash the LOLA while 3@ 17650's will drive the LOLA very satisfactorily.

Donn was also right that each of my 3@ 3" reflectors and my 2.5" reflector are very slightly orange peeled (if that's what VVLOP means). Thank you Donn!

In other words, Dave, I really need one of your towers to get maximum throw and to shorten the length of at least one of my Turbohead units. (I suppose I could load the 6 * 123 cell 12pm body with 2 @ extenders with 4 @ fat 2700 maH AA NimHs for a two hour runtime).

PayPal will be sent shortly for a 1-level 4-14 volt XP-G R5. Thanks again for making these classic lights more useable.
