Updated OP with this additional info.

Distance to target 740'/225 meters. Shot at 50mm to approximate natural perspective. There was a little bit of smoke in the air from a bonfire behind me.

Typical performance of 370Kcd!!! This is running off two cells. With a single 18650 performance is right at 300Kcd. Comes with a spare o-ring, holster, and lanyard. This is a multi-mode light with adjustable output and dedicated high and strobe modes. The LED is being run at 3.4A on two cells.

When I show the guys at work this little baby in action they are going to be in shock and awe! This is amazing!

So last year I was doing some night hikes and I'm sure I was being tracked by coyotes and they were howling all around me. I didn't have a thrower... but not THIS YEAR! I'll see them coming a mile away lol. I'm surprised this is still in stock.

They shipped out Saturday (minutes after the orders were placed). I expect mine tomorrow based on USPS tracking (it's at the local office but does not seem to have made it on the vehicle for delivery today).

Oh yes you will. Seems like I have a package waiting for me when I get home after all. Sigh, USPS tracking is sometimes confusing, other times non-existent (but I heard they are working on it diligently).

Saabluster,

I paid for my DEFT edc-X at 4:30 am last Saturday, for shipment to Maryland.

Any idea about when it will be mailed?

I won't get to do any pictures tonight or take the EDC-X out into the wild but here's a quick preliminary report. This is my first DEFT so what is a wholly new experience for me is likely not news to you.

First and foremost, tighten the tailcap well (battery +ve toward LED of course); it's a lockout tailcap. It took a PM to saabluster to get my clueless self straightened out on that one! :ohgeez:Second, the optic is very effective and projects a faithful replica of the LED die. Make sure you are at least 3-4 yards away from the wall to avoid a blindingly bright spot. I tried a phone picture but it does not come out well; I'll have to pull out my DSLR to do it justice. You'll need to unscrew the head about a turn to a turn and a quarter (from fully tightened) to get the sharpest focus. The light uses an electronic switch (I assume) with a rotary knob that has four settings. Leftmost is constant high, 2nd is constant low, third is momentary strobe, and rightmost is momentary high. You have to set the desired level before turning the light on. Twisting the rotary while the light is on has no effect.

The build is outstanding and from what little I see of the emitter pill and driver, the work is meticulous. I hope to have time to take it out on the bicycle trail this weekend so I can test it's reach. I won't be shining it up to the clouds because I am near several airports.

All in all money well spent. I can't wait for the Victor later this week. Hope you all enjoy yours as much as I will this weekend.

Ciao,
Mo

I have limited experience with optics of this nature, but loosing the head to get it in focus at 10m might mean it is out of focus at 200m. And 200m is the intention of this light, I'd guess.

Yes you are right, I should have made it clear it is only for 6 yards which is all I got to try yesterday; well I did try 2 yards and had to adjust the focus but the spot was too bright at that distance. I should have a better feel for the focus this weekend.

If you place the emitter at the focal point of the lens, you will get a collimated beam and that is what you want for long reach (throw). At short distances you can move the emitter away from the focal point to get a sharp projection of the emitter.
