Hi,

I work on a helicopter as a medic and I'm looking for flashlight suggestions. The patient compartment I work in is small. It does have decent lighting but the engine isn't always on while I'm working. I like red lighting, but would be happy if there was a light I could switch between red, green, and white. Size would need to be small. Throw is not important but maybe useful on a scene. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

Re: Cockpit LED

Streamlight sidewinder or sidewinder compact sportsman model? It has white red, green and blue. It always starts in high, which is only 55 lumens. The hotspot is tight so if you need something floody this wouldn't be the light for you. There are also the military, aviation and medical models which start on low, but they have either white, red and blue or white green and blue.

Re: Cockpit LED

I'd consider one of the Zebralight head lamps with 120deg beam. They still sell a couple red ones, but only in AA format I think. The high cri "c" or "d" models I think would be very nice if you can give up red. Or they are small enough you could have a red and regular one maybe clip one and use it as angle light and the other as headlamp. lots of options with a 120deg beam, if you keep it low it should be amazing and not bother other people.

Re: Cockpit LED

I would suggest the first-light TORQ med kit:

Or if you've got the money and want extra output, the Tomahawk or T-Max:

Tomahawk:

T-Max:
http://www.firstlight-usa.com/products/t-max-le

They have a red+green light mix that much better at identifying blood than red or even blue is. All three have a belt clip that can hang off MOLLE or a belt or if you want to quickly detach and connect the light from your belt or MOLLE vest, a "tactical retention system", which also has an option for a magnetic mount.

Re: Cockpit LED

Nitecore also makes a great multi led headlamp. the HC-90.
Handheld worth considering: Sunwayman D20A. Red & White leds and runs on two regular AA's.

I have a Tomahawk LE, from a few years ago. It has a high parasitic drain that makes in really impractical. They may have fixed that, but I'd want to confirm that before getting a Tomahawk, or T-Max.

Re: Cockpit LED

I've been looking at all the choices suggested and keep coming back to the zebralight. I really like the look and price.

I've been a pilot for almost 30 years and normally I recommend against red lighting. Most of the time a dim white light is better. But in your case the red is probably less offensive to your patient. So I will make an exception this Time :)

I have used the aforementioned sidewinder and it is a good light. You may want to look at some of Nitecore's lights as well. The SRT is one of my favorites. The "chameleon " is another to look at.

Since you want multiple colors, look for something with a RGB LED. I think Smith and Wesson make an inexpensive one with the RGB.

Take care and stay away from the tail rotor.

I can't say that I've had many issues with dead batteries in my tomahawk le or t-max Le when I have gone to use them. I guess it depends on what your version of high is?

Re: Cockpit LED

I just got a Nitecore SRT7 that might be good for your application. Or maybe smaller versions of their SRT models. Easy switching (with a 'smart' ring) through the colors - red, blue, green along with variable output white. I like it a lot so far for what it is. Momentary switch is useful too and I never thought I'd need or want that.

Re: Cockpit LED

The Eagletac C25LC2 color and the Led Lenser T2QC Quad-Color might be worth a look. I find that the RGB leds on my SRT7, Chameleon CB6, CR6, CG6 and RRT26 are so artifact ridden that they are not very useful. The MH27's are much better and brighter, but none of these lights are very compact.

Since you are a medic, I assume you would need your hands free to work on patients, so I suggest a headlamp. The UK Vizion has white and red, and the Apex has white and green, or white and red, depending on which model you choose. Here are links:
