Hi SRM,

To answer your question, no. The 5 x 1/2D cell MagCharger style battery stick is rated at 6 Volts nominal but comes off the charger well above 7 Volts.

If, somehow, you can prove through losses and loading that the actual Voltage reaching the drop-in is below Mac's stated maximum of 6 Volts then you might be onto something.

Re: Mag SST-50 Drop-In Sales Thread

NimH cells that have been sitting around for a year are pretty much dead batteries. The drop-ins work prefectly fine with Alkaline cells but with reduced output. Alkalines will run Med and Low with now problems but will sag on high. Forward voltage on the SST-50 LED's is 3.2-3.5v. The drop-ins are still plenty bright using Alkalines but NiMH cells are the way to go.

These are the cells I recommend

At $7 a cell they make Alkalines obsolete.

Is there an alternative to the alkaline that will last longer than one year? I don't really want to replace NiMH D-cells every year, or even two.

Why would you have to replace Nimh cells every year? In the beginning of the thread the "Dead" Nimh cells where dead because they sat for a year without being charged. Throw them on the charger and you would be good to go. Nimh cells even if fully charged then put in a draw for a year will be pretty much dead due to the self discharge. Li-Ion has a much much lower self discharge which is why they are so popular.
