Even the dancing signs are cold

There's one of those things nearby where I live.

Normally, the thing's in perfect tune, with one arm "waving" toward the entrance of the little restaurant it's advertising.

This past week or so, it's basically doing jumping jacks ... folding over mid-"steam" and then sort of righting itself again. (The valve's half-frozen, I suspect.) With the frigid cold, I don't blame it. Good time to be doing calisthenics, stuck outdoors like that.

Eh... my weather app isn't so polite...and this is probably one of the more polite things it says:

...and a huge round of applause for my new multi-stage heat pump! It's been a champ this winter.

The contractor thought I was nuts spec'ing out 27F for heating in Florida, but proof is in the pudding.

It's kind of wild to think it's cheaper to just let it run 24/7 than use a setback, but when it gets this cold it truly is. COP is 4.3+ above freezing, 3.5 around freezing.

Not at all. It’s reality. I had a nice walk with my dog this morning and it’s 9F. The sun is out. The air is crisp. It’s just perspective.

Has to be early/mid Jan. for it to be above 32F here,,,, although it's moderated alot from previous weeks.

Regarding my thermostat at 58F..

December was around 5F below average, January was around 4.8 below average.
That doesn't sound like alot, but it is around here.
My gas bill for those combined months of 62 days was $257,, or just over $4/day just for the NatGas./taxes/everything else
I figure another $1.25 for electric to run my furnace (has alot of electronics in it,, not just the 2-stage fan)

So, in the coldest part of winter here, it cost me around $5.25/day to stay reasonably warm.

==== There were days of -20F actual temp in January(not wind chill),, if I had my thermostat at 68F that difference then would be nearing 90F between outside and in.
My furnace would've of worked VERY hard to maintain that difference; my gas & electric bills would likely have been $7/day probably more.
.. since it's not just the temp difference, the curve would be different to maintain

Now, I’m no professional, but it has been told to me by those in the business that it costs a lot to get up to a certain temp but not so much to maintain it. Similar to a car; lots of gas to get from 0-60 but much less to stay at 60. Never turn your heat way down when you leave for the day then crank it when you get home.
Again, I don’t have the training nor the experience to give expert advice, so all I can say is we all do what we feel is best for us. I like to be warm in the winter . In the summer the air conditioning only is used in the hottest months otherwise the windows are open and fans are utilized. That works for me.

A bit of apples to oranges comparing car,, many V8's will only fire 4 cylinders on highway

Haven't touched my thermostat since my Trane was installed in Nov.
It's the difference in temperature:
When it's 25 degrees outside, my furnace runs little,,
,,at 0F outside it'll run regularly

Lastly, having my thermostat set lower is something I'v done for a couple decades,, not just this year.
Saved thousand$ doing just this one thing in my life.

Hello Orbital. I'm sure you realized I was merely foolin about. I really don't know how you cold-weather folks survive at such extremely low temperatures. It's raining and 48 degrees here in Parkland, WA.
