Re: PT Aurora worth it for $12.99
At $13, just barely worth it... if anything you can use the nice headband on another headlamp.
2 complaints I have with the Aurora:
1) Button takes WAY too much effort to press on.
2) Case easily cracks under light pressure to open to access the batteries.
I usually wear my Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 1AA headlamp on evening runs. The 1W lamp with a flip over diffuser is perfect for seeing 20-30 ft in front of me. The 1AA battery isn't too heavy, so the headlamp doesn't bounce around on my forehead while running.
$13 at Wal-Mart, so you're not...
About all they would need to do to the ROV Sportsman Extreme light is exchange the worthless blue 5mm LED and replace it with a white one. It is one of my most heavily used headlamps I have. The battery life while running the main LED is a bit short (~ 1 hour on a Eneloop AA).
They actually made several variants of the Inova X1. I have one that has a 5mm LED without the focused lens. It puts out a nice floody beam, but doesn't have much throw. It's a great camp light, as it runs for a very long time on a single AA cell.
I finally got my AKOray AA from Hong Kong (took almost a month to arrive from date of order). The light output is pretty fantastic... it easily overpowers my old Fenix L1P, and gives my Fenix L2D a good competition.
The build quality seems pretty decent for a $23 flashlight.
The only thing...
Sorry, but I can't talk you out of one of the most useful lights I've ever used. I use my Zebralight H50 (1aa) all the time on backpacking trips. It's a perfect camplight and great reading light on low or medium. I rarely use or need the high setting.
Runs for literally days on a single...
The runtime of the H50 is too short?? What kind of batteries did you use in it? Mine runs for more hours than I care to keep track of using a single Eneloop AA.
I picked up the Coleman today at Wal-Mart - still $24.88. The battery case is a VERY tight fit for my Energizer NiMh batteries. It would be a bit difficult to do a battery swap in a dark area just by feel. The build quality is ok, nothing spectacular. I do like the beam pattern of the main...
I've had very good luck with the Sanyo Eneloop AA's and the Rayovac Hybrid AA's. The Eneloops can usually be found at Circuit City, the Rayovac Hybrids at Wal-Mart. Both provide very good shelf life after charge. In fact, after 6 months sitting in my digital camera, they show 80% charge.
hmmm... with gas here around $3.50/gal does it REALLY make sense to drive around a lot looking for a $9 headlamp? That $9 headlamp would get mighty expensive fast.
