It's simply a matter of different electronics in the driver. He didn't set it up to run on li-ion. It's not all bad. Being programmed to run on a narrower power source also increases efficiency and run time. Usually.

Jason provided me a pre-paid return shipping label and has fixed the problem free of charge. Great customer service.

Thank you Prometheus Lights !

Yes it's a 219a. They come in different tint variants but the a is bit less efficient (especially with boost circuits as it has a slightly higher vf) with slightly lower CCT as well.

Has anyone tried running their copper version on 10440? I know they aren't supposed to be compatible, which makes sense for the constant current 2-mode circuit, but normally PWM based dimmers will happily run a li-ion effectively direct drive against the LED. With the relatively high vf of the 219a I would expect this to be well within the spec of the emitter from a small 10440 cell, but I haven't got brave enough to test it myself..

Thanks, I've tried it out now and it does give it a boost on all levels. I only have old blue trustfires so max amps is around 0.9 on high. I read 0.1 and 0.3 on low and med respectively. I'm happy it doesn't go any higher tbh, the copper handles the heat really well but the efest results in the other thread were worryingly high for a 219a. Does anyone know if the emitter is on a direct to copper board? Otherwise at that output level I'd be worried about heat buildup at the PCB and possible desoldering of the emitter.

I prefer the spacing of the modes on ni-mh tbh (0.03,0.20, 1.00 amps), but it's nice to have the option for a bit of a boost when wanted.

I use medium the most. With high, occasionally and not more than 3 minutes at a time and not when the 10440 is fresh from the charger, so I don't worry too much. I haven't heard anyone breaking their Beta QR by using 10440.

Can anyone tell me if the 2-MODE Beta QR (v2) utilizes PWM? Contemplating ordering the Electroless Nickel finish...

what makes you ask again?

Hi Jon... I simply need to make absolutely sure before I drop $90 on a AAA light (light + Ti clip)... I know you didn't have your hands on the 2-mode version to test out yourself, so I figured I would double check with current owners. I also wasn't sure if anything could have changed with regards to the driver being utilized in these lights in past year since you last spoke with Jason...

P.S. - I did shoot him an email inquiry yesterday - haven't heard back yet.

Does anyone know the color temperature of the Nichia LED's being utilized in these lights?

219a, nominally 4500k and 90CRI

I met with Jason in person when I bought my beta and he kindly measured the actual CCT and CRI of my unit. My first impressions and the measurements are in this post

this webpage has more info, and I also suggest you contact Jason directly to get His answers to your questions as well.

Just for the sake of others following this thread... Jason got back to me and indicated that all of the Betas are utilizing PWM - but suggested that one would be very unlikely to notice/detect it...

Thanks for sharing info.
When I bought my copper beta, I did not know anything about PWM.

I only found out because I was taking photos of it, and one day I got this pic (by iPhone 5):
6x4eggZucn9dKAUijLyWEgNpRUc75toP5DZDdi8iZpr5Pr2fVbA_k3lFBhd5RqCPIpatVaoVbZblwq77Jm3Zbo3KAfgXmUhG3NN-WG1xNywnBJBJsSwgwNnwhG5MVuQ8qaDfKcWAoKGA2U1O3uQvHmK8zhpNYHmp0jJn1dAvg6s8hECwwC5Vak8heCfYF23bp7LIVset-EyaWENVE7LHPOq7GNhtnsfoPw3V4ydSELe12tsE8pF5gYXV2_TUfretAczCkGT-hsJNHi5IFyBHVoX94UWX9wE4nrGgZEwYXrbpX2put7QOhcWXu5I2nZ5rgxH6w0_iwaz7lU-MMxp0hw_L4o4ANWHtVKD4m3VZaRI1soctxbEb1suFIMSyl9YAHNaJQsXpm7LVXa-syuZuVjukYVKzDXRjEtCqvGUnga1vwe091r3j15OtOsaJ06e6rdN5HyPEZHcqLTt_j6CtR2E4mg66smSE1IohnMp4CFFRMySnLmrf5yX4lCzUO63PWyeaHkuQzEOlZVbJg4DwFbK9pE1cYvyDoap8F16oeSJGjGiJgRdPUhGu5QLVEgdM6GiApocYI4iCQYQvFOs6OIWCHhfbXTfVmqmKuWytEizw4GUT=w1214-h910-no

I then discovered that the Lumintop Copper Tool also had PWM. I was not looking for PWM, just comparing beams, here is the photo that tipped me off:

I AM very suprised he told you the 2 mode betas use PWM, he told me they had NoPWM. But I've never tested one.

I Loved my Copper Beta. It was my first Nichia, and it started me on a fun journey learning about CRI, Copper, pocket clips, weight, CCT, and things LED. I have great respect for Jason, he will always be my first Nichia Guru.

fwiw, the Copper Lumintop Worm does NOT have PWM, it uses a newer driver, and a newer Nichia, than the Beta. But the Worm does not have the QR. I believe the Worm head will work on the Beta body, although I have not tried. Ive used both the Worm head, and the Beta head, on a Maratac body. Here is the Beta head on a Maratac:

(note the maratac head will not light on the Beta or Worm body, their threads are too short to reach the pill)

The QR feature of the Beta works really well. Here is what it inspired me to do, so I could QuickRelease a smaller, lighter light… Beta head on a Thrunite body.

The Beta clip costs extra, its very nice, but it wont reverse to fit a hat. Also, the Beta Clip replaces the QR, you cant have both installed at the same time.

The 2mode 219a didn't use PWM. I have the V1 & V2 219a. it could be he changed when he started using 219b.
I check by waving the light really fast at an angle.

Thank You!
clearly what Jason said to Wolfgaze is not actually correct. The 2 mode is NOPWM. The 3 mode is YESPWM

I do not believe Jason has gone to a 219b in the Betas. afaict, he ordered a batch of lights from Lumintop, and is still holding old stock with 219a.. but, if you show photos of the LEDs, we can confirm if there is a 219a or 219b installed
Unfortunately I don't have his more recent batch. I got mine V2 on Nov 2014 and it's got a 219a. I just heard some here said beta now uses 219b.
Yeah I'm pretty sure he uses a 4000k 219B for the Beta v2 and a 4500k 219B for the Alpha custom.

Unsure about the past…
Anyone here got a beta v2 this year? Anyways PWM isn't bad if it's done right. I've used a PWM LED desk lamp and my eyes fatigued after a few mins. I didn't get that from my copper beta. I've used it for 10~12mins during my fridge repair a few times.
